Subliminal advertising–hidden messages embedded in ads–is considered a deceptive business practice by the Federal Trade Commission. Yet a legal kind of “subliminal” persuasion happens everyday. Shoppers are regularly encouraged to buy by appeals to their senses or unconscious assumptions.
